Collaging Patterned Paper Fashion

Lesson Plan, Grades 1-5, Art History, History, Social Studies, Roylco, Collage, Multi-Cultural

Description

Lesson Plan and Artwork by Kathryn Cahill

In this elementary art lesson, students explore global and local cultures through fashion design. They use stencils and colorful patterned papers to assemble clothing collages, incorporating diverse textures and designs inspired by many traditions. Each student selects Roylco® papers to represent different cultural influences, then cuts and pastes them into unique clothing designs, creating a fashion collection fit for a runway. This hands-on activity fosters creativity and appreciation for global artistry while developing fine motor skills and visual expression.

Objectives

  • Engage in dialogue about fashion in art history, history, and social studies
  • Create paper people and then design clothing for each, using Roylco stencils and patterned papers.

Instructions

1

Fashion design is the art of creating clothing and accessories. Discuss the definition of fashion and the process by which fashion designers sketch out ideas, pick out materials, and construct pieces.

2

Discuss the role of fashion in culture. This includes the ideas of cultural expression, historical influence, fashion trends, and fashion around the world.

3

Demonstrate the planning of a fashion collection. Be sure to include a sketch for inspiration, along with an example of choosing a working color palette, and then model the actual construction of this project.

4

Create a fashion doll template. Roylco Fabulous Family Portrait Stencil set makes it easy to create a blank “paper doll” body. Pop out all the plastic parts of the stencils and use the interior, loose stencil parts. Arrange the stencil parts into a full body shape on top of a chosen sheet of multi-cultural construction paper. Secure the pieces with sticky tack before tracing them in pencil around the outside of the body. Remove the stencil pieces and the sticky tack from the paper. Cut around the outside of the body on the line to create the blank body form. Make four different bodies, using the stencil parts arranged in different ways. Keep the stencil parts you used nearby so you can continue using them as templates for fitting clothing.

5

Select paper. Roylco makes it fun to browse different textiles, patterns, and colors just like a fashion designer would shop for materials. Let the makers choose from a dazzling variety of papers like the African Textiles, World Patterns, and Decorative Hues. Try to keep a consistent or coordinating color palette that can be combined into a fashion collection.

6

Using the interior stencil parts from the last step with the sticky tack, trace and cut out the different pieces of “clothing” for the dolls, just like a fashion designer would cut fabric using a pattern. After cutting out the paper clothing, temporarily attach the clothing to the doll bodies using the sticky tack until you are ready to secure it permanently using a glue stick.

7

Add details. Develop and refine the work. Cut thin strips of paper to use as trim, belts, and jewelry. Cut out and glue down some hair or a hat for the people. Make accessories that coordinate and include buttons, collars, shoes, and more.

8

When the four figures are completely dressed, glue them to a 12" x 18" background paper to showcase your fashion collection. You can add a border to the final piece using Roylco’s Paper Chains and glue.

9

Invite the creators to write about their fashion designs on another sheet of paper that can be attached to the back.

10

Engage in conversation to analyze the work and explore how knowledge and personal experience led the students to their artistic choices. Talk about how the finished artwork connects to social, cultural, and historical fashion.
