This lesson explores the use of visual imagery through abstract painting. Students will communicate the use of visual perception by deconstruction of a form to create thought and imagination to convey a feeling or mood for the viewer.

Objectives

  • Students will learn techniques of acrylic painting using non-traditional methods of paint application on canvas by creating and reconstructing the visual world utilizing color line, texture.
  • Explore, research and create paintings that encompass the techniques of abstractionism from Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, color field painting, Minimalism, and Postmodernism.

Instructions

Share with students some of the works that make up the Modern Art Movement such as Cubism, Expressionism and Minimalism.

Have students investigate color schemes used during this movement including monochromatic, analogous, complementary and original color schemes.

Have students research the painting techniques, brushworks and the painting of various modern styles by use of color, line and texture.

Allow students to experiment with the different painting techniques and color schemes uncovered in their research before starting on their own work.

Have students share their experiments with the class.

Students can now create an original painting using acrylic paint on canvas.
